to endure a painful or unpleasant situation with courage and fortitude, often accepting something difficult or unpleasant because it is unavoidable or necessary.
 
불가피한 상황에서 용기를 내어 아픈 일을 견디며 감내하는 것을 의미하는 것으로, 19세기 중반부터 20세기 초반까지 전투나 군대에서 중상을 입은 병사들은 수술이나 접근이 필요할 때 마취제가 부족하거나 없는 상황에서 고통을 줄이기 위해 총알을 깨물기도 했던 것에서 유래한다.  그에 따라 현재까지도 어려운 상황이나 불쾌한 일을 받아들이고 담대하게 직면하는 것을 의미하는 것으로 사용되곤 한다.
